PRESS RELEASE: IGNORE THE FAKE...
- 2025-04-06
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that the petition seeking the recall of the Senator representing Kogi Central Senatorial District has failed to meet constitutional requirements, bringing the process to a halt.
Following its weekly meeting on Thursday, April 3, 2025, INEC disclosed that after a thorough review of the signatures and thumbprints submitted by petitioners, only 208,132 signatures were confirmed—falling short of the required 237,278 signatures (50%+1 of the 474,554 registered voters in the constituency).
INEC emphasized that the recall process strictly follows Section 69(a) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which mandates that a recall petition must be supported by more than half of the registered voters in the affected constituency. With the petition missing the mark by 29,146 signatures, the commission will not proceed with further action.
The electoral body has issued a Public Notice on the matter, detailing the findings and informing all concerned parties—including the presiding officer of the Senate. The summary of the review is also available on INEC’s official website and social media platforms.
This development signals the end of the recall effort, with INEC reaffirming its commitment to fairness, transparency, and adherence to constitutional provisions in all electoral processes.
